Guwahati, Assam
Arrival in Guwahati — Gateway to the Northeast
Arrive at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati — the main hub for Northeast India. Transfer to your hotel in the city. After freshening up, visit the Kamakhya Temple — one of India's most important Shakti Peethas (goddess temples), perched dramatically on the Nilachal Hill above the Brahmaputra River. The temple is ancient, the energy here is extraordinary, and the views across the Brahmaputra from the hilltop are exceptional. Evening: sunset cruise on the Brahmaputra — India's mightiest river, a kilometre and a half wide here, with the Meghalaya hills visible on the far bank.

Drive to Kaziranga — One-Horned Rhino Country
After breakfast, drive to Kaziranga National Park (approximately 4.5 hours along NH27). En route, stop at the Hajo pilgrimage town — an extraordinary confluence of Hindu, Muslim, and Buddhist sacred sites within a few kilometres of each other, reflecting the religious plurality of Assam. Arrive at your jungle lodge inside or adjacent to the park boundary by early afternoon. Orientation briefing from your naturalist. If timing permits, an evening nature walk in the buffer zone to get your eye calibrated for tomorrow's safari.

Elephant Safari at Dawn — Jeep Safari in the Western Range
The pre-dawn alarm at 5am. Elephant safari — the traditional Kaziranga experience — riding on elephant-back through the tall elephant grass (over 3 metres high in parts) in the cool darkness before sunrise. This is how you approach rhinos safely and at very close range: the elephant masks your human scent and navigates the grass that would be impenetrable on foot. One-horned rhinos, wild water buffaloes, and swamp deer are regularly encountered at arm's length from elephant-back. Return for breakfast at the lodge. Afternoon: jeep safari in the Western Range (Bimali Range) — where tiger sightings are most frequent. Your naturalist knows the terrain intimately.

🚨 Kaziranga has the world's highest density of Bengal tigers per square kilometre — though they are difficult to spot through the tall grass, pug marks are commonly found.

Central Range Jeep Safari — Brahmaputra Floodplain Views
Full safari day. Morning jeep safari in the Central Range (Kohora) — the most biodiverse zone of the park, with the best views across the Brahmaputra floodplain. Kaziranga has over 2,400 one-horned rhinoceroses — two-thirds of the world's entire population. Seeing one (or many) is essentially guaranteed. The park also supports 35+ tigers, 1,300+ elephants, the world's largest concentration of genetically pure wild water buffalo, and over 500 bird species including the endangered Bengal florican. Between safaris: naturalist presentation on Kaziranga's extraordinary 1985 UNESCO World Heritage designation and the remarkable conservation story behind it. Afternoon safari in the Eastern Range (Agoratoli) for elephants and rare birds.

Drive to Jorhat — Ferry to Majuli, World's Largest River Island
Drive from Kaziranga to Jorhat (approximately 2 hours). Take the public ferry across the Brahmaputra to Majuli Island — at 880 square kilometres, the world's largest inhabited river island, formed by the constantly shifting braids of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries. Majuli is the cultural heartland of Assam, home to 22 Vaishnavite satras (monasteries) that have preserved the art forms, music, mask-making, and religious traditions of 15th-century Assamese culture. Check in to your riverside eco-stay.

Satra Monasteries — Mask Making — Mishing Tribal Village
Full day on Majuli. Morning visit to the Kamalabari and Auniati satras — two of Majuli's most important Vaishnavite monasteries, where monks preserve and perform the Sattriya classical dance form (listed by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity). The Auniati Satra museum holds an extraordinary collection of Assamese royal artefacts, jewellery, and utensils. Afternoon: a traditional mask-making workshop — Majuli is the centre of Assam's extraordinary papier-mache and bamboo mask tradition. These masks, some over a metre tall, are used in the annual Raas Mahotsav festival performances. Visit a Mishing tribal village — the Mishing are one of Assam's major indigenous communities, living in traditional bamboo stilt houses along the river bank.

Ferry Back — Tea Plantation Country — Dibrugarh
Morning ferry back to the mainland. Drive to Dibrugarh (approximately 2.5 hours) — the tea capital of the world, where the rolling hills are covered with the finest Assam tea estates producing the strong, malty black tea that goes into every breakfast cup in Britain and many an American household. Afternoon: a guided tour of a working tea estate — walk through the tea bushes with a plucking demonstration, visit the processing factory (withering, rolling, fermentation, drying), and finish with a curated tasting of 6 different Assam teas. Dinner at your heritage tea bungalow.

More Tea Country — Dibru-Saikhowa National Park
Second full day in Assam's tea country. Morning at leisure on the tea estate — the sunrise over the tea gardens is extraordinary, and the bungalows where British estate managers once lived are extraordinary pieces of colonial history. Afternoon excursion to Dibru-Saikhowa National Park — a lesser-known reserve that is one of the few places in the world where feral horses roam freely through a riverine forest and grassland ecosystem. The park also has tigers, elephants, Gangetic river dolphins, and the Hoolock gibbon — India's only ape.
