Tamil Nadu Temple Trail

The Dravidian south — where the gopuram towers rise above the rice paddies and the temple bells have been ringing since before Rome was built. Nine days through the extraordinary cultural landscape of Tamil Nadu: French colonial Pondicherry, the Chola dynasty's architectural masterpiece at Thanjavur, the world's largest functioning temple complex at Srirangam, and the astonishing Meenakshi Amman Temple at Madurai, ending in the Portuguese- and Dutch-inflected elegance of Kochi.

Drive to Pondicherry — French Colonial India
Drive 150km south to Pondicherry — the former French colony that retained its French character so completely that walking through the French Quarter feels like a small miracle. The streets are planned in a grid, named in French, lined with bougainvillea-draped colonial houses painted in mustard yellow and colonial white. The Promenade des Anglais along the seafront. Café de Flore serving proper café au lait. The Aurobindo Ashram — the spiritual community founded by philosopher Sri Aurobindo and the French woman known as the Mother in 1926, now one of India's most significant spiritual centres. Auroville (10km away) — the intentional city of 3,000 residents from 50 countries, founded in 1968 around the Matrimandir golden meditation dome.

Chola Country — Brihadeeswarar Temple
Drive 200km to Thanjavur (approx 3.5 hours) — the capital of the great Chola Empire, whose dynasty built some of the finest temples and sculptures in the history of Indian art. The Brihadeeswarar Temple, built in 1010 CE by Raja Raja Chola I, is one of the greatest achievements of Indian architecture: a 216-foot vimana (tower) that was the tallest structure in India for 900 years, built without mortar, its capstone alone weighing 80 tons, raised to the top by a ramp 6km long. UNESCO World Heritage Site. The bronze casting tradition of Thanjavur produced the finest religious bronzes in India.

Continue to Madurai — the city that has been continuously inhabited for 2,500 years and is built around the Meenakshi Amman Temple, one of the most magnificent temple complexes in the world. Arrive in time for the evening ritual — the spectacular closing ceremony when the image of Shiva is carried to the goddess Meenakshi's chamber.

Meenakshi Temple — Full Exploration & Sunrise Ceremony
Spend a full day at the Meenakshi Amman Temple. The pre-dawn puja ceremony begins at 5am — the temple opens in darkness, with oil lamps and chanting, and the atmosphere is profound. The four gopurams (gateway towers) rise between 45 and 52 metres, covered in thousands of stucco sculptures painted in vivid colours — every mythological creature, deity, and hero in the Hindu canon. The Hall of a Thousand Pillars is a forest of sculpted columns that each produce a different musical note when tapped. The Golden Lotus Pond reflects the towers in its still water. The temple is a living religious institution — thousands of pilgrims from across Tamil Nadu every day.
